Chris Caul is a mountaineering expert & a course designer/director for Primal Quest. JD Eskelson has soloed Mount Mckinley & has summited many other mountains throughout the world. Nathan Kile is the Program Coordinator for Adventure Sports at WVU and, an expert instructor in climbing/ascending/rappelling. Kristen Diefenbauch has tons of experience in both expedition racing & ultra events & is a PHD in Exercise and Sport Science & Sport Psychology. Suzan Falvey has raced at the highest levels nationally in both sprint adventure races & mountain biking. Suzan has her Masters degree in Exercise Physiology. Matthew Shreve is a Class V kayaker & an expert speed climber.

All of our instructors love to share their knowledge of expedition racing with our students.

EXPEDITION MOUNTAIN BIKING:

  • Learn how to properly select, maintain & inspect your mountain biking gear from our expert instructors.

  •  Learn wilderness bike repair.

  • Learn how to ride technically

  • Learn to navigate obstacles, the ready attack position, powering through turns & more.

  • Learn proper climbing & ascending technique.

  • Learn to push or tow a teammate for maximum synergy.

EXPEDITION PADDLING

  • Learn the characteristics of your boat, paddle & personal flotation device (PFD)

  • Learn wilderness boat repair Learn how to properly read river currents

  • Learn paddle strokes.... the power stroke, sweep stroke, draw stroke & back stroke  

  • Learn proper river rescue techniques & rescue throw line applications

  • Learn to self rescue & boat recovery

  • Learn to aggressively swim in white water

  • Learn to improve your paddling endurance

Learn all of this & much more on the beautiful Yough & Casselman Rivers.

EXPEDITION ROPES   

  • Learn to select, inspect, wear & care for your mountaineering gear. 

  • Learn to recognize proper rope utilization & safety.

  • Learn proper rappel technique from hooking up to proper body position. 

  • Learn to perform self arrest, recovery, self rescue. 

  • Learn proper ascending techniques & fluid energy application. 

  • Learn to do a main line exchange while ascending. 

  • Learn proper top rope blundering/climbing technique. 

  • Learn to select you climbing route, proper commands, hand holds & proper belay technique. 

  • Learn the bowline, figure 8, prussic & square knot.
